While walking through the forest, I came upon a scene that looked like a funeral for a tree. A tree, likely an eastern hemlock, fell to the ground many decades ago, perhaps a century. Something about the lighting and framing of the scene made it appear to me that the deceased was being watched over by its surviving neighbors. These trees may stand over the deceased for another century as it slowly returns to the earth, until it is their turn to lie on the forest floor.
